Berlin Wall MemorialR5 Bernauer Straße was one of the focal points of the East-West division. Communal areas and living space were destroyed here, families and friends separated. In this street, dramatic escape attempts succeeded or failed, pictures of which circulated around the world. The acting director of the foundation, Maria Nooke, guides visitors around the sites of escape tunnels dug from East to West Berlin between 1962 and 1971.
